The Gentlemen’s Code

What it entails:

The JTMUN Society prides itself upon upholding the timeless values of respect, honour, and courtesy. In the spirit of true diplomacy, every delegate is expected to embody the dignity of an ambassador, ensuring that all interactions are conducted in an atmosphere of cordiality, civility, and mutual regard.

Though clothed in simplicity, the Gentleman’s Code carries the weight of generations of diplomatic tradition. It is both a safeguard and a standard, ensuring that delegates feel not only welcomed, but honoured in their participation. Built upon the pillars of fairness, equality, and mutual understanding, the JTMUN Society is resolute in fostering a safe and refined environment where every delegate may flourish.

To preserve this tradition of excellence, the following Code shall be observed with the utmost seriousness, as it reflects the very character of those who aspire to statesmanship.

The Code:

1. Dignity of Office

Delegates shall carry themselves with the measured dignity expected of ambassadors.

  • Attire must reflect professionalism and respect for the institution they represent. Both Western formal dress (such as a suit and tie) and traditional Eastern attire (such as a shalwar kameez, or other national dress) are equally welcome, provided they are worn neatly and respectfully
  • Conduct, posture, and bearing should inspire confidence and respect.

  • Delegates must remain mindful that they embody the voice and presence of their nation or institution.

2. Respect and Cultural Sensitivity

  • Delegates shall demonstrate tolerance and respect towards persons of all backgrounds, cultures, and opinions.
  • Privacy and personal space must be respected at all times.
  • Derogatory remarks, cultural insensitivity, or personal attacks are strictly prohibited.

3. Prohibition of Intimidation and Impropriety

  • Any form of harassment, coercion, or intimidation contradicts the principles of diplomacy and will result in immediate removal from proceedings.
  • Delegates shall resolve disagreements through dialogue and persuasion, not hostility.

4. Speech and Diplomacy

Delegates must speak in a respectful, courteous, and measured tone at all times.

  • Shouting, interrupting, or attempts to dominate through volume rather than reason are deemed unacceptable.

5. Professional Conduct

  • Delegates must be punctual for all committee sessions.
  • The Dais is to be addressed with formality and courtesy, as the custodian of debate.
  • Behaviour both inside and outside committee sessions must reflect professionalism, for it represents the delegate’s institution.

6. Confidentiality and Discretion

  • Discussions within committees are to be treated with seriousness and discretion.
  • Misuse of information, whether spoken or written, for personal advantage or to undermine another delegate, is strictly forbidden.

7. Use of Devices and Materials

  • The use of mobile phones, cameras, or laptops during formal committee proceedings is prohibited.
  • Speeches must be delivered without reliance on electronic devices.
  • Delegates must not engage in photography or videography inside committee rooms.
  • Delegates must inform the secretariat or any member of the management if they do not wish to be included in the photography or videography of the conference.

8. Lobbying Etiquette

  • Lobbying shall only occur at designated times and in designated spaces.
  • Any attempt to lobby in a manner that circumvents fairness will be considered a breach of the Code and may affect awards.
  • Delegates must maintain a respectful distance and composure during unmoderated caucuses to ensure orderly and safe interaction.

9. Prohibition of Substances

  • The possession or use of electronic smoking devices, tobacco, or any nicotine-related substance is strictly prohibited on the premises.

10. Financial Integrity

  • Delegation fees must be paid in full before the commencement of the conference. Failure to comply may result in restriction from participation.

11. Authenticity of Work

  • Pre-drafted resolutions and directives are strictly forbidden. All documents must originate from a genuine debate within the committee. Any violation will result in severe sanctions.
